Fall Animation Challenge: The Results

Just another quick update! Last month I wrote about participating in Sir Wade Neistadt‘s animation challenge during October and November. It was a genuinely great time, and I feel like it really put my animation skills to the test. Between working with a strict deadline and animating a dance (a kind of motion I had never animated before), calling this event an “animation challenge” was absolutely spot on. And for the last few weeks I’ve been on the edge of my seat waiting to hear the results. And I’m happy to report that they’re finally in!

Winners included a top three along with five creativity awards including best FX. There were so many fantastic entries in the end, and it was great seeing how people creatively interpreted the challenge. The winners announcement took place last Tuesday (December 12th), with Sir Wade livestreaming the results. It was a really exciting stream and I’m so glad I was able to catch it live. Check it out if you have the time! My animation appears around the 43:38 minute mark.

While I didn’t manage to win anything, I was genuinely psyched to get an honorable mention! It was really fantastic to hear feedback from the judges, including Sir Wade himself. I got some really helpful and supportive notes which I’ll definitely be keeping in mind for future animations. A huge thanks to all the judges! And a huge congratulations to all the winners!

At the end of the livestream Sir Wade published the challenge montage which features all of the submissions in one 20 minute video filled to the brim with fun animation. My animation appears around the 2:24 mark. Definitely give the whole thing a watch, there are so many great shots in there!

Hopefully, if I find the time, I would love to write up a post-mortem about my experience participating in the challenge. It was a really enjoyable experience overall, and I want to dive deeper into what I would’ve done differently with my animation workflow. But that’s for another time!

A massive THANK YOU to Sir Wade, Autodesk, and the panel of judges for their incredible contributions to this challenge. It was such a fun event, and I’m thankful I got the opportunity to participate. Here’s to the next one!

Thanks for reading!
